Putin Agrees to Resume Three-Way Ukraine Peace Talks After Witkoff Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to resume US-mediated peace talks with Ukraine as soon as next month, the Kremlin said on Wednesday, after Putin met US envoy Steve Witkoff at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg — the ninth in-person meeting between the two men.
According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the new three-way talks would be held at a technical level and could begin on or after November 10, possibly in Abu Dhabi, focusing on post-war security guarantees. The last such US-mediated talks took place in February.
The meeting opened with a goodwill gesture from Russia: the release of Stephen Hubbard, a retired American schoolteacher held in Russia, whom US President Donald Trump had asked Putin to free.
But the Kremlin cooled expectations about Witkoff's trip. Ushakov said the Ukrainian and European proposals the envoy brought from Tuesday's Oslo meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders "did not entirely satisfy" Moscow, and Putin has shown little sign of compromising on core demands including full Russian control of Donetsk and no NATO membership for Ukraine. Putin also offered to help Trump deal with Iran and discussed a possible first-ever meeting of Trump, Putin and China's Xi Jinping.
