Queensland Floods: Man Found Dead as Days-Long Deluge Hits Australia

A man's body has been found in floodwaters in Queensland, Australia, after four days of torrential rain left rivers and roads flooded across the state's south and east. Emergency services were called to a creek at Boompa, on the Fraser Coast, shortly after 11am on Monday, after reports that a man had been found unresponsive. He was declared dead at Smothering Creek on Boompa Road, and police have begun an investigation and will prepare a report for the coroner.
Further south, swiftwater crews rescued campers stranded by rising water at a public campground in Leyburn, in the Southern Downs. Queensland Fire and Rescue crews answered the call at 7:45am on Monday and brought the group to safety by about 11:15am. Police said there were no reports of physical injuries among those rescued.
The flooding followed downpours from Thursday to Monday that hit widely scattered parts of the state. Blackdown Tableland, near Rockhampton, recorded 439.4 millimetres in four days to early Monday, while Lower Springbrook near the Gold Coast recorded 325.2 millimetres and Nambour near the Sunshine Coast recorded 314.2 millimetres. Some roads remain closed, flash flooding hit the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane, and authorities warn more rain and flooding are still possible.
