At least eight passengers were killed and more than 30 injured on Wednesday when a Karachi-bound passenger bus overturned on the Indus Highway in Punjab's Rajanpur district, rescue officials said.

The bus, traveling from Karachi to Dera Ghazi Khan, rammed into the central divider near Bangla Hidayat in Rojhan tehsil and flipped over, trapping dozens of passengers inside. Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the scene with ambulances and used cutters to pull bodies and the injured from the mangled wreckage.

Officials said around 20 of the injured were in critical condition and were shifted to hospitals in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan. Hospital sources warned the death toll could rise. Women and children were among the dead and injured.

Police impounded the vehicle and opened an investigation. Initial findings point to over-speeding and driver fatigue — the bus had been traveling non-stop over a long distance from Karachi.

The crash is the latest in a grim pattern of deadly road accidents on Pakistan's intercity highways, where speeding, overloading and poor vehicle condition claim hundreds of lives every year.
