The Tampa Bay Rays are headed to the World Series after beating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Monday night. Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero each smashed a two-run homer, while Freddy Peralta threw 5 1/3 gritty innings to earn ALCS MVP honours in the Rays' third pennant in their 29-season history.
The Rays will face the Milwaukee Brewers in a historic matchup: it is the first World Series in which both teams are chasing their first-ever title since the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals in 1980. Game 1 is set for Friday night in Milwaukee.
Díaz backed up his own guarantee of victory with a 416-foot blast in the eighth, while a sellout crowd of 40,230 waved rally towels at Tropicana Field. The loss extended Cleveland's championship drought to 78 years — the longest active wait in baseball.
