Rockets vs Spurs Final Score 114-110: Thompson's Last-Second Block Denies Wembanyama in Austin

Amen Thompson blocked Victor Wembanyama's game-tying layup attempt with less than a second remaining, and the Houston Rockets held on to beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-110 on Friday night in Austin. Fred VanVleet made two free throws for the final points after Thompson turned away the 7-foot-4 French star in the lane, as the Rockets started their season with two victories.
Alperen Sengun led all scorers with 29 points, including eight straight in the fourth quarter, muscling his way inside for layups and free throws. Thompson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Kevin Durant added 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists in a homecoming game for the former University of Texas star, hitting a critical three-pointer with 1:34 left.
Wembanyama had 25 points and 13 rebounds but San Antonio fell to 0-2. He briefly thought he had tied the game with a banked long three-pointer, only for it not to count because Spurs coach Mitch Johnson had called timeout with five seconds left. Dylan Harper scored 20, including a driving dunk that left the Spurs trailing by two with 46 seconds left. Wembanyama was asked afterwards what he would do differently on the final play: "I would have dunked." Houston now heads to Atlanta on Saturday night, while San Antonio visits Dallas.
