Romania Blames Russia After Drone Strike Sinks Cargo Ship in Black Sea

Romania's President Nicusor Dan publicly blamed Russia on Friday after a drone strike sank the Comoros-flagged cargo ship Khoryv in the Black Sea, killing one crew member and leaving three missing.

The vessel sent a distress signal around 10:00 AM local time, about 13 nautical miles off the port of Constanta, before capsizing. Of the 13 crew members - 10 Ukrainians and 3 Azerbaijanis - nine were rescued alive, one body was recovered, and three remain missing. Rescue teams battled choppy seas and high winds, with helicopter searches impossible in the conditions.

'It is part of Russia's escalation process in its war in Ukraine,' Dan said. Prime Minister Luca Niculescu called the strike 'unacceptable' and 'a flagrant violation of international law,' while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was 'deeply alarmed.' More than seven cargo ships have been hit off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria in the past two weeks, leaving around 30 sailors dead or missing, and NATO is deploying extra patrol aircraft, drones and radar to the Black Sea.
