Rubio Meets Jaishankar in Mumbai as US and India Race to Finalize Trade Deal

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio landed in Mumbai on Tuesday for high-stakes talks with India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as Washington and New Delhi push to finalize a long-awaited trade deal. The two met at Mumbai's Taj Mahal Palace, with trade, energy security, defence cooperation, technology, and critical minerals on the agenda.
The visit — Rubio's second to India since May — comes amid recent strains over US tariffs, restrictions affecting Indian professionals, and Washington's pressure over India's Russian oil purchases. American officials say the two sides are 'very close' to sealing the agreement, and the controversial tariffs tied to Russian oil purchases have already been lifted.
The talks also covered the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Rubio is scheduled to visit Reliance Industries' refinery in Jamnagar on Wednesday before wrapping up the trip. For the wider region, a settled US-India trade deal could reshape supply chains across South Asia.
