Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire: White House Announces Local Truce in Oleshky From October 29

The White House said Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a localized ceasefire in the frontline city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, starting October 29, 2026. The pause in fighting is meant to let humanitarian aid enter the city and to prepare a safe corridor for civilians who want to leave.

The announcement credited US First Lady Melania Trump with mediating the agreement, saying she and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms. Around 2,000 people remain in the Russian-occupied city, most of them elderly residents facing severe shortages of food, water, electricity and medicine — some reportedly surviving on weeds and boiled grass. The ceasefire covers Oleshky only, not the wider war.

Ukrainian officials had pushed for weeks for a humanitarian pause, and Ukraine previously used drones to airdrop emergency supplies into the city. Residents who choose to leave will receive coordinated transport to their preferred destinations, whether in Russia or Ukraine.
