Saudi, Pakistan and Turkey Hold High-Level Security Talks With Iran in Tehran

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey met Iranian leaders in Tehran on Monday for high-level talks on regional security, in the first joint contact between Iran and all three members of the Mecca Pact since Saudi Arabia came under escalating attacks from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis. Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin led the delegations.
The visit was proposed during Munir's trip to Tehran last week, Iranian officials said, and the agenda included Israel's policies in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon and the fallout from US and Israeli military action against Iran. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting could be a first step toward regional security arrangements built around the interests of countries in the region.
Under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed in August, an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, and the pact's ministers held an emergency meeting in Riyadh earlier in October. Qatar's mediators also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Sunday, as regional diplomacy intensifies ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3, with both Washington and Tehran warning of a possible return to wider war.
