Schick Makes History as Leverkusen Come From Behind to Stun Freiburg

Patrik Schick of Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat in-form Freiburg 2-1 at home on Sunday — and Patrik Schick wrote his name into the club's record books.

Freiburg, the Bundesliga's form team, struck first through Derry Scherhant after just 14 minutes, with Germany coach Jurgen Klopp watching from the stands. Leverkusen fought back in the second half: Ibrahim Maza levelled with a clinical finish, and then Schick struck 14 minutes from time to make him the first Leverkusen player ever to score in each of the first six Bundesliga matches of a season.

"It was a lot of fun, especially against such a strong opponent. Huge respect to Freiburg but we showed what we can do," Maza told DAZN, praising his growing partnership with Schick. The win moves Leverkusen to fourth — 13 points from a possible 18 and level on points with third-placed Freiburg — an impressive recovery after a shock opening-day defeat to promoted Elversberg. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster admitted the defeat was "completely unnecessary," but the night belonged to Schick, whose six-game scoring streak keeps Leverkusen firmly in the title race.
