Shehbaz Defends Governor's Rule in KP, Accuses PTI of 'Criminal Negligence'

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday defended the imposition of governor's rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the decision was taken “under extreme compulsion” amid a worsening security situation. He was chairing a meeting of the provincial apex committee in Peshawar — his first visit to the province since the measures were imposed on October 11.
On October 11, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the prime minister's advice to impose the emergency and governor's rule under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, transferring executive powers to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, assisted by an advisory council. Emergency measures were imposed in 12 districts, and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and his cabinet were removed from office. Field Marshal Asim Munir, the chief of defence forces, also attended Thursday's meeting.
Sharif accused the previous PTI-led provincial government of “criminal negligence” on security, saying 5,000 police vacancies were never filled, Safe City projects were left incomplete and the Counter-Terrorism Department's capacity was not enhanced. He pledged to work “day and night” for the province's development and recalled that around 80,000 Pakistanis had been killed in the country's war against terrorism. The PTI has rejected the federal government's move and opposed the emergency.
