Shehbaz Defends KP Emergency Rule in Peshawar Visit, Accuses PTI of 'Criminal Negligence'

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chairs a meeting

PESHAWAR — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday defended the imposition of governor's rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the decisions were taken 'under extreme compulsion' amid the worsening security situation.

The prime minister made the remarks while chairing a meeting of the provincial apex committee in Peshawar to review law and order. It was his first visit to the province since governor's rule and the emergency were imposed on October 11. Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, federal ministers and newly appointed provincial advisers attended.

Sharif sharply criticised the previous PTI government, accusing it of 'criminal negligence' over the province's security. He said KP was a 'cradle of peace' six years ago, but around 5,000 police posts had remained vacant under PTI's rule, the Safe City project was left unfinished, and the Counter Terrorism Department saw no meaningful improvement. He said the federal government had offered the previous two PTI chief ministers all possible resources to fight terrorism, but the offers were not acted upon. An advisory council has now been formed to improve the situation in the province.
