SK hynix Posts Record Q3 Profit as AI Memory Boom Passes 100 Trillion Won in Revenue

South Korean chipmaker SK hynix has posted record quarterly results, with third-quarter revenue passing 100 trillion won for the first time in its history. Revenue reached 104.62 trillion won (about $73.2 billion), up 327.9% from a year earlier, while operating profit hit 83.33 trillion won, up 632.1% year on year. It is the company's sixth straight quarter of record results since the second quarter of last year, and its operating margin hit a record 79.7%, meaning it kept roughly 80 won in operating profit from every 100 won of sales.

The boom is being driven by artificial intelligence. Sales of sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4), server DDR5 and enterprise solid-state drives built on 321-layer NAND flash have all surged as AI data centres scramble for faster memory, pushing prices higher. SK hynix says virtually all of its DRAM and high-bandwidth memory volumes are sold out through 2029, with deals with 14 major customers covering more than half of planned 2027-28 production, and it expects shortages through 2030.

Investors cheered the numbers. SK hynix shares surged more than 4% on the day, and the company announced an additional 60 trillion won in shareholder returns, taking its total planned returns for the year to around 100 trillion won. The results also set the stage for a huge week in tech earnings, with Microsoft and Alphabet reporting later on Wednesday, as Wall Street watches to see whether the AI spending boom can keep delivering profits to match its promises.
