SpaceX Closes $40 Billion Debt Deal for AI Chips as Musk Warns 200+ Neoclouds Could Fail

SpaceX has closed a $40 billion debt deal to buy the powerful computer chips behind artificial intelligence, chief executive Elon Musk announced on Sunday, in one of the largest AI infrastructure financings ever.

Musk said the package is mainly callable debt — meaning SpaceX can repay it early — tied to graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia, with deliveries expected in the first and second quarters of 2027. He credited the company's investment-grade credit rating and its steady revenue from Starlink satellite internet and rocket launches for making the borrowing possible.

The announcement came with a stark warning for the wider AI industry. Musk said debt markets have 'almost entirely shut off' lending to companies without substantial revenue beyond AI data centres, and predicted that more than 200 so-called neocloud firms — companies that rent out AI computing power — face a brutal shakeout. 'The 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many,' he wrote. The deal follows weeks of reports that SpaceX was negotiating the financing with banks and asset managers, and underlines how expensive the race to build AI computing capacity has become.
