Supermarket giant Ahold Delhaize is still working to restore online services at its American stores more than a week after a cyberattack forced websites and apps offline across the United States and Europe.
The Dutch-Belgian group, which owns Stop & Shop, Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford and Martin's in the US, plus Albert Heijn, Delhaize and other brands in Europe, confirmed on October 12 that it had detected a security incident. The company later said the attack resulted from the malicious actions of others, filed a formal report with Dutch police on October 19, and notified the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre within 24 hours of the discovery. Physical stores have remained open throughout the incident, but online ordering and delivery were disrupted. The company says it has no evidence that sensitive customer, associate or partner data was taken, though the investigation continues.
Recovery has been uneven. In Belgium, e-commerce is fully operational, and Albert Heijn's website and app are back online, with home deliveries expected to resume on October 23. But the American brands still have no firm restoration date, with services expected to return in the coming days. Chief executive Frans Muller apologized to customers for the disruption, saying taking systems offline had been the right decision.
