The United Kingdom is bracing for its first named storm of the 2026-27 season, as the Met Office issued an amber wind warning for south-west England ahead of Storm Austen. Forecasters warn that gusts could reach 80mph (129km/h) in exposed coastal areas on Friday morning.

The amber warning is in place for Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly from 3am to 10am on Friday, October 23. A wider yellow wind warning covers London, the South East, South West, Wales and the West Midlands from midnight until 2pm. The Met Office says the storm will bring damaging winds, heavy rain and dangerous coastal conditions, with a risk of travel disruption, power cuts and damage to buildings.

Storm Austen was named on Tuesday and is expected to sweep across southern Britain from Thursday night into Friday morning. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has urged people to stay away from exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers, warning that conditions could knock people off their feet. Forecasters say the weather will stay unsettled through the weekend, with more strong winds expected in northern parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday.
