Storm Austen Batters UK With 111mph Gusts as 18,000 Homes Lose Power — Storm Boelo Incoming

Storm Austen batters the UK coast with huge waves

Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, has slammed into the UK with winds reaching 111mph, leaving more than 18,000 homes and businesses across south-west England without power. Gusts of 111mph were recorded in Padstow, Cornwall, while West Cornwall saw 94mph winds and St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly clocked 76mph.

National Grid said engineers had restored power to more than 12,000 properties by Friday morning, but thousands remain in the dark, including over 6,000 households on the priority services register for vulnerable customers. Falling trees and flooding disrupted travel: Exeter Airport cancelled flights, ferry services to the Isles of Scilly were suspended, and schools in Guernsey closed as a precaution.

The storm’s reach extends across the Channel — around 161,000 homes in Brittany and Normandy lost power in France, where 23 departments were placed under orange weather alerts. And there is little time to recover: Storm Boelo is approaching this weekend, with the Met Office issuing amber wind warnings for Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England from 9pm Saturday to 9pm Sunday, warning of 80mph gusts and a possible danger to life.

The Prime Minister has warned Britain could face “a winter of greater flooding” as the storms line up one after another.
