Storm Boelo Batters UK With 80mph Winds as Tens of Thousands Lose Power

Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the season, battered the United Kingdom on Sunday with gusts of up to 80mph, leaving tens of thousands of homes without power and causing widespread travel disruption. An amber warning for wind remained in place until 9pm on Sunday across mainland Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the far north of England.

SP Electricity North West, which covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria, said more than 57,000 homes had been cut off on Sunday morning. The highest gust was measured on the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, where winds reached 82mph at about 4am, while gusts of 75mph hit South Uist in the Western Isles. The Met Office warned of flying debris, damage to buildings and trees, and dangerously large waves.

Travel was hit hard: more than 50 scheduled departures from UK airports were grounded, Dublin Airport cancelled nine outbound and ten inbound flights, and train and ferry services were disrupted. Events were also cancelled, including London's Diwali on the Square celebrations and Liverpool's River of Light event. With 58 flood alerts and 12 flood warnings in England and 30 flood warnings in Scotland, officials urged people to stay indoors as much as possible while the warnings remained in force.
