Tennis Star Elina Svitolina Splits From Gaël Monfils, Citing Emotional Toll of Ukraine War

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has announced her separation from fellow tennis player Gaël Monfils, saying the emotional impact of the war in Ukraine left her needing "to find my way back to myself."

The 32-year-old world No. 6 shared the news in an emotional Instagram post on Monday, calling it "the most difficult thing I have ever had to share." Svitolina wrote about sleepless nights, self-doubt and a growing feeling of "slowly losing myself" as the war in her homeland continued.

"Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside," she wrote. "Some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you."

Svitolina, who grew up in Odesa — a city heavily bombed by Russia since the full-scale invasion in February 2022 — said Monfils "listened" and "respected what I need with a strength and grace I will never forget." The couple married in July 2021 and have a four-year-old daughter, Skai, who Svitolina said "will always come first." "Our marriage is ending, but our family is not," she added.
