Tesla Shares Surge Over 6% as Merger Talk and Robotaxi Growth Lift the Stock

Tesla shares surged more than 6% on Monday, climbing to around $396, as investors warmed to the electric car maker after its third-quarter results and fresh talk of a possible combination with Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX. Tesla reported revenue of $28.05 billion for the quarter and adjusted earnings of $0.48 per share, beating analyst expectations, with 486,532 vehicles delivered — although operating income fell 56% from a year earlier.

The rally was also fuelled by merger speculation. Reports say Musk has floated combining Tesla with SpaceX, which would need the backing of holders of half of Tesla's outstanding shares plus separate SpaceX approvals. Analysts at Barclays, who see further upside in the stock, point to growing adoption of Tesla's Full Self-Driving system and its Robotaxi business, whose unsupervised miles rose eightfold during the quarter. Latvia has now approved supervised Full Self-Driving, becoming the tenth European Union country to do so.

Despite Monday's jump, Tesla shares are still down for the year so far, and traders are watching whether the stock can push above $406, its next key level. The company is also pressing ahead with its Semi truck, its Optimus robot and major AI chip investments, as investors weigh the cost of those bets against the pace of earnings growth.
