Third Tanker in Two Days: Iran Says Another Oil Ship Hit a Mine in Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Monday that another oil tanker caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine — the third such incident in just two days. The IRGC Navy said the tanker was travelling through an "unauthorized" southern route with its positioning and tracking systems switched off when it hit the mine, triggering an explosion and a fire in its engine room. A day earlier, the Guards reported that two tankers carrying about two million barrels of crude had caught fire after hitting mines in the same waterway. None of the claims have been independently verified.

The incidents come as Iran tightens its control over the strait, which normally carries about one-fifth of the world's oil supplies. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran's offer to reopen the strait within days still stands — if Washington accepts its conditions, including lifting the blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions on its oil exports. The United States, which has imposed its own naval counter-blockade, insists the strait remains open. With Brent crude hovering near $109 a barrel, every new incident in Hormuz sends fresh jitters through global energy markets.
