"This Wasn't an Accident": Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Hurt in Deliberate Car Attack

An Australian lawmaker is fighting for her life after what the prime minister called a deliberate attack. Independent MP Helen Haines, 65, was struck by a white Toyota Land Cruiser outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon at around 3:35pm local time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC: "This wasn't an accident. There was a deliberate act, it would appear." Haines was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital in critical condition after bystanders rushed to her aid. A 43-year-old man from nearby Tarrawingee was detained at the scene by a passerby before police arrived, and officers found a knife inside his vehicle.

The joint counter-terrorism team — including Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO — has been activated, though the motive remains unknown. Haines, a former nurse and midwife who has represented the seat of Indi since 2019, is best known for championing a national anti-corruption commission.
