Thousands Evacuate India's East Coast as Cyclone Arnab Nears Landfall

Thousands of people have been moved to shelters along India's eastern coast as Cyclone Arnab, a very severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, closes in on landfall. India's weather office says the storm will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Yanam, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, by Wednesday morning, October 28, with sustained winds of 125 to 135 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching 150 kmph.
Nearly 50,000 people had already been moved to safety by Monday night, out of an estimated 400,000 who may need evacuation, according to Andhra Pradesh disaster management chief Prakhar Jain, who said evacuations were continuing. In the Kakinada region alone, around 89,000 people were shifted to 101 relief camps, while officials in Visakhapatnam identified more than 10,000 households across 37 villages as at risk.
The storm has already disrupted travel and daily life. At least 12 trains were cancelled and rail services on 53 routes along the southern coast were suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday, while schools and colleges in five districts of neighbouring Odisha were shut. In Nepal, authorities warned tourists against high-altitude travel from Thursday night through Saturday, fearing the storm could trigger downpours, snowstorms and avalanches in the Himalayas.
