Three Earthquakes Rock Vanuatu in Minutes: 7.2-Magnitude Tremor Triggers Tsunami Warning

Three powerful earthquakes struck off Vanuatu within minutes early on Saturday, triggering a tsunami warning and panic among residents of the Pacific island nation. The first and largest tremor, measured at 7.2 magnitude by the US Geological Survey — Germany's GFZ centre put it at 7.1 — hit about 200 kilometres west of Sola at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres.

Minutes later, a second quake of 6.9 magnitude struck near Port Olry on Espiritu Santo island, followed about 11 minutes later by a third tremor of 6.3 magnitude in the same area. Authorities issued a tsunami alert and urged coastal residents to follow official guidance while the situation was monitored.

So far, no damage to buildings or infrastructure and no casualties have been reported. Vanuatu sits on the New Hebrides Trench in the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most earthquake-prone regions on Earth, with more than 70 quakes recorded there in the past 30 days alone.
