Three Missiles, 18 Dead: Houthi Strike on Yemen Army Camp Signals Escalation
At least 18 people were killed on Monday when the Iran-aligned Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at a Yemeni government training camp in Shabwa province, four government and medical sources told Reuters. The strike hit soldiers during a morning training exercise in the energy-rich coastal province of south-central Yemen.
Fighting has intensified since the Houthis advanced toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping chokepoint at the mouth of the Red Sea. Earlier this month, government forces launched a campaign to retake Houthi-held areas near the strait while the group besieges Taiz. The conflict has become another front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran, with the Houthis escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh's international airport and oil giant Saudi Aramco.
Yemen's war began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa; a 2022 truce held until this year. Aid agencies warn conditions in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises are deteriorating fast.
