The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets 96-84 in their home opener at the Paycom Center on Thursday night, improving to 2-0 on the young NBA season. But the win came with a historic footnote: two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored just 17 points, ending his record 141-game streak of scoring at least 20 points.
Denver led 48-44 at halftime and looked in control, but the Nuggets managed only 16 points in the third quarter as Oklahoma City's defense took over. Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field and under 30 percent from three-point range in a grind of a game.
Gilgeous-Alexander shot 6-of-19 from the field and never made a shot in the first half. He reached double figures with 10 fourth-quarter points before the starters were pulled. His streak had broken Wilt Chamberlain's NBA record last season at 127 consecutive games.
The loss drops Denver to 0-1. Nuggets forward Cameron Johnson missed the second half with an injury, adding to a rough opening night for the visitors.
