Trump Ordered to Testify Under Oath by December 11 in $10B BBC Lawsuit — or Face Dismissal

A federal judge in Miami has ordered Donald Trump to sit for a sworn deposition by December 11 in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC — warning that the case could be thrown out if he fails to comply. US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett issued the ruling on Thursday after the broadcaster accused the president of stalling to avoid answering questions under oath.
Trump canceled a deposition scheduled for October 16, with his lawyers citing matters of national importance. The BBC’s attorneys told the court he had spent that day at political events in Georgia, arguing that “no plaintiff is above the law.” The judge also rejected Trump’s attempt to block video recording, allowing the seven-hour questioning to be preserved on camera.
Trump is suing Britain’s publicly funded broadcaster over its 2024 Panorama episode “Trump: A Second Chance?”, which spliced together parts of his January 6, 2021 speech in a way he says falsely implied he directed supporters to storm the US Capitol. The BBC has admitted the edits were misleading and apologized, but denies it is liable for defamation — and is now seeking financial records from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club to defend against the damages claim.
