Trump Says Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting Will Be Set Up 'Very Soon' — But Kremlin Urges Caution

Trump Says Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting Will Be Set Up

US President Donald Trump has said a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be arranged "very soon", raising fresh hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough in a war now in its fifth year. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday after campaign rallies in Texas, Trump said he had discussed both the Ukraine and Iran conflicts with his top advisers. "I think with Russia we're making a lot of progress with Russia-Ukraine. There'll be a meeting set up very soon," he said, naming Putin and Zelenskyy as the participants but giving no date, venue or format.

A face-to-face meeting between the two leaders would be their first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Moscow and Kyiv have held three rounds of US-mediated talks this year, in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, without a lasting settlement. Zelenskyy has said a trilateral meeting involving Kyiv, Washington and Moscow could take place in November, with Abu Dhabi emerging as a possible venue, and has pressed for talks to begin as soon as possible.

Moscow, however, struck a more cautious note. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the talks would take place after November 4, denied reports they could happen on the 4th itself, and said no signal on a date had yet been sent, adding that timing would also depend on the battlefield and the situation in the Middle East. On Iran, Trump left the door open to further US strikes after the November 3 midterm elections, saying only: "Anything's possible."
