Trump's Approval Rating Falls to Record Low of 31% as Midterms Draw Near

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to 31 percent — the lowest level of either of his two presidential terms. The four-day online survey, which closed on Monday, has Trump down a percentage point from two weeks earlier, as Americans worried about high gasoline prices signaled they may punish his Republican Party in the November 3 congressional elections.
On the generic congressional ballot, 47 percent of registered voters said they would vote Democratic versus 35 percent for Republicans — a 12-point Democratic advantage, the widest of the current election cycle. Much of the shift came from women: half of female voters said they would pick Democrats, compared with 32 percent choosing Republican candidates. If Democrats take control of either the House or the Senate, it could seriously complicate Trump's agenda in the final two years of his term.
The poll found that 68 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy, including 37 percent of Republicans. His popularity has been sliding since he ordered U.S. military strikes on Iran in February alongside Israel, a war that triggered a surge in gasoline prices and hit household budgets. Voters picked Democrats over Republicans as the better stewards of the economy by 40 percent to 33 percent. The survey covered 1,679 U.S. adults, including 1,279 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
