Türkiye Sends Makkah Defence Pact With Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to Parliament for Ratification

Türkiye has taken a major step toward formalising its landmark defence alliance with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, submitting the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement to parliament for ratification.
Three parliamentary sources told Reuters on Tuesday that the government had sent the pact to Ankara's legislature. Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who is currently visiting Kyrgyzstan, will refer the agreement to the foreign affairs commission on his return, with debate possible as early as Friday. Details of the text are expected to become public once it reaches the commission.
The three countries signed the agreement in Makkah in August, under which an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all. At an emergency meeting in Riyadh earlier this month, the partners agreed to ensure the "rapid deployment" of military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia, which faces attacks from Yemen's Houthi militants.
A Turkish official told Reuters that Ankara's own contribution was expected to be limited to military equipment, intelligence sharing and weapons systems, while Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stressed the pact is not an "offensive agreement" and that Türkiye would not send troops abroad to attack another country.
