Two Men Charged in UK Over RAF Fairford Incident Linked to Iran

British prosecutors have charged two men under the National Security Act over an incident last month at RAF Fairford, the airbase in southwest England that was used by United States bombers for strikes on Iran. The Crown Prosecution Service announced the charges on Tuesday, October 27, with both men due to appear in court later the same day.
Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, is charged with engaging in conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service, while Nouman Essghir, 24, is charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the United Kingdom on August 22. Police said the country Abdulkarim was suspected of assisting was Iran, according to Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of national counter-terrorism policing.
The charges follow the arrest of five British men outside the military base in the early hours of September 27. The US bombers stationed at Fairford were withdrawn on security grounds shortly afterwards. The case comes as tensions between Iran and Western powers remain high, with the Tehran security talks involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey this week underlining how closely the region is being watched.
