UFC 333 Result: Volkanovski Knocks Out Evloev in Round 2 to Retain Featherweight Title

Alexander Volkanovski retained the UFC featherweight title at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi, stopping the previously unbeaten Movsar Evloev by technical knockout at 4:54 of the second round on October 24. The finish came in the closing seconds of the round, when the champion landed a heavy shot that badly hurt the challenger, then poured on ground strikes until referee Marc Goddard stepped in with just five seconds left on the clock.
The first round had been close and hard to score, with Evloev, a decorated wrestler, taking half the round before shooting for his first takedown, only for Volkanovski to spring straight back to his feet. The loss is the first of Evloev's career, dropping him to 20-1 after nine UFC wins without a stoppage had finally earned him a title shot.
The 18,000-strong crowd at the Etihad Arena gave the devout Muslim challenger a hero's welcome, while the 38-year-old champion received a surprisingly muted reception. Afterwards Volkanovski told Daniel Cormier that escaping the fight with so little damage could tempt him to compete again, leaving the next chapter of one of the sport's great careers open.
