UK Budget 2026: Healey Gives State Lenders £20.4 Billion Boost

Britain's finance minister John Healey is set to announce £20.4 billion ($27.3 billion) of extra support for two state-backed lenders in his budget on Wednesday, the Treasury has confirmed. The package gives £15.4 billion more to the National Wealth Fund and £5 billion more to the British Business Bank, spread over roughly the next five years.

The Treasury said the extra capital would help more British businesses grow and put investment behind the industries, infrastructure and places that create good jobs. Officials estimate the funding will support around 100,000 jobs by 2035, with a focus on sectors including artificial intelligence, defence and green energy. The plan was first reported by the Financial Times before the Treasury confirmed it.

The announcement comes just days before Healey delivers his budget on October 28, a statement that is being watched closely for how the government plans to balance support for growth with control of borrowing. Business groups have been pressing for easier access to finance, and ministers hope the bigger war chests for the two lenders will unlock further private investment alongside the public money.
