UK Chancellor Promises £800m Red-Tape Cut for Businesses Ahead of Budget

UK Chancellor John Healey has promised businesses some “breathing space” ahead of his first Budget next Wednesday, unveiling plans to cut “form-filling and pointless paperwork” that the government says will save firms around £800 million a year.
The package breaks down into £290 million from eased reporting requirements, £105 million from simpler asset-manager rules, £116 million from streamlining the home-buying chain, and £155 million from extended tariff suspensions on more than 250 products. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has backed the plan, which targets a 25% cut in regulatory costs by the end of this parliament.
The announcement is a modest, business-friendly appetizer before the real fiscal numbers land with the Budget on October 28. Britain is expected to face some of Europe's highest energy prices this winter, and the system operators say keeping the lights on will cost a premium — so the Chancellor's cost-of-living arithmetic will be under close scrutiny when the full Budget is revealed.
