UK Launches £100 Million AI Biosecurity Lab With OpenAI and Anthropic Backing

The British government has announced a new AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), the first organisation anywhere devoted solely to using artificial intelligence to spot biological threats sooner and respond faster to disease outbreaks. Announced on Saturday 24 October, the lab will receive £100 million in public money, with up to £200 million more pledged by AI firms OpenAI and Anthropic.
OpenAI will contribute £100 million in computing capacity and model credits, including trusted access to its most capable models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme, while Anthropic will provide up to £100 million in credits, model access and technical support. Google DeepMind and the British biology-AI firm Basecamp Research will collaborate on research, with DeepMind offering scientists and access to Gemini and specialised science models.
The lab will run as an independent non-profit, initially focusing on two goals: detecting emerging biological threats as early as possible, and shortening the path to vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures. It sits inside a wider £165 million biosecurity package, which also includes £65 million for biological surveillance, plus a further £120 million for the AI Security Institute. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called it a major new global institution, though officials have not yet said where it will be based or when it will start work.
