UK Launches World's First £100M AI Biosecurity Lab With OpenAI and Anthropic Backing

Britain has committed £100 million to build what officials describe as the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity laboratory, officially launched on October 24, 2026. OpenAI and Anthropic are contributing up to £200 million in model credits, bringing the total package behind the new body to as much as £300 million.
The lab will use frontier AI systems to understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats. Its initial programme includes faster detection of emerging pathogens and quicker development and testing of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures. The facility is expected to become operational in phases through 2027, working alongside UK health agencies, international biosecurity organisations and universities specialising in computational biology and epidemiology.
The announcement makes the UK one of the largest government investors in AI-powered biosecurity anywhere in the world. It also captures the double-edged nature of modern AI: the same technology that can design new medicines could also enable new biological risks — and governments are racing to build the safeguards first. Google DeepMind is also reported to be supporting the effort.
