UK Unveils £600 Million AI Security Plan With Backing From OpenAI and Anthropic

Britain has set out around £600 million — roughly $800 million — of funding largely aimed at defending against health and security threats from artificial intelligence, the government announced on Saturday. The package, unveiled ahead of Wednesday's Budget, is one of the biggest state bets yet on making AI safer rather than just faster.

The largest share goes to a new biosecurity drive: £100 million for an AI Biosecurity Lab to detect biological threats and £65 million to develop countermeasures against pathogens. Tech companies OpenAI and Anthropic will offer up to £200 million of model credits to the initiative, with Google DeepMind and London-based startup Basecamp Research also lending support.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the lab should become a major global institution protecting people from emerging biological threats. The rest of the money spreads widely: an extra £120 million for the AI Security Institute, £130 million for cyber defences for critical infrastructure, £60 million for AI robotics and manufacturing, plus funding for a chip design academy and AI research. The plan shows how AI safety has moved from a niche concern to a central part of Britain's economic and security strategy.
