Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Barrage on St Petersburg, Setting Oil Terminal Ablaze
Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks of the war overnight into Sunday, setting fire to oil facilities in Russia’s second-largest city, St Petersburg. Russia’s defence ministry said its air defences shot down 1,015 Ukrainian drones across 15 regions in a single night.
St Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov said fires broke out at the St Petersburg oil terminal, the Ruchi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpino district. At least one person was killed and 15 were injured, local authorities said. Twelve apartment buildings and two houses were damaged, and residents evacuated during the night were later allowed home.
The strikes went beyond energy targets. Online retailer Ozon said a drone hit its St Petersburg logistics centre, starting a fire, while Russian social network VK said its data centre in the Leningrad region was attacked but services kept working. Fire Point, the Ukrainian company that builds the drones, said the military had struck the VK facility.
The attack comes amid open friction between Kyiv and Washington. US President Donald Trump has criticised Ukraine’s strikes on Russian energy sites, calling them a “disgrace” last week. Ukraine briefly paused such attacks but has resumed them. The Associated Press called the barrage one of Kyiv’s largest aerial attacks of the war.
