UN Expert Urges Indonesia to Rethink Role in Trump

A United Nations human rights expert has urged Indonesia to reconsider its involvement in US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" for Gaza, warning that the body is being shaped by Israel and the United States without a Palestinian voice.

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, told Reuters in Jakarta on Thursday that joining the board was dangerous because it "risks to normalise a very abnormal mechanism." Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, is a key troop-contributing member of the board and has pledged soldiers for an international stabilisation force in Gaza.

The Board of Peace was unveiled by Trump in January to handle global conflicts normally managed by the United Nations. Rights experts have criticised it for including Israel as a member while giving no seat to a Palestinian representative, even though it is meant to supervise the temporary governance of a Palestinian territory.

Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that discussions around the board remained on hold, restating its earlier position. Albanese has drawn fire from several Western capitals — the United States has imposed sanctions on her, and her native Italy has called for her resignation.
