UN Food Agency Slashes Gaza Aid as Funding Runs Dry: 500,000 to Lose Monthly Support
The UN World Food Programme has warned that severe funding shortages are forcing it to drastically cut food assistance in Gaza, leaving about 500,000 Palestinians without monthly food aid, Reuters reported on October 19.
The agency said it is reducing its planned monthly assistance from 1.6 million people to 1.1 million — roughly a one-third cut. Daily hot meals served by community kitchens will drop from 250,000 to 150,000, and families in hard-to-reach areas near the so-called Yellow Line, marking Israel's zone of military control, will now receive a meal every other day instead of daily.
The cuts hit as winter approaches and nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million residents remain displaced. The agency stresses the reductions are driven by money, not easing need: more than 1.4 million people — around 67% of Gaza's population — are projected to face acute food insecurity at Crisis level or worse between July and December 2026, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification analysis.
