UN Investigators Say Foreign Arms and Fighters Are Fuelling Sudan's War

United Nations investigators have warned that foreign weapons, military technology and fighters are intensifying Sudan's devastating civil war, calling for stronger international action to cut off the flow of arms. The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan presented its latest findings to the UN General Assembly in New York on October 28, painting a grim picture of a conflict now in its fourth year.
Mission chair Mohamed Chande Othman said investigators found reasonable grounds to believe that a transnational network spanning several countries has supplied the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces with personnel, training, weapons and logistics. The mission documented up to 2,000 former Colombian military contractors working alongside RSF units in Darfur and Kordofan, operating combat drones, artillery and advanced weapons. The investigators stressed their findings did not establish responsibility by the governments of the countries named. More than 1,000 people were killed in drone strikes in the first five months of 2026 alone, including 114 people, around 60 of them children, in a strike on Kalogi in South Kordofan. The mission called for an expanded arms embargo and for the International Criminal Court's mandate to cover all of Sudan. The war began in April 2023 and has displaced around 13 million people, making it one of the world's largest displacement crises.
