US Candidates Now Campaign to Win Over ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude

American political campaigns are now fighting a new kind of election battle: persuading AI chatbots. A Reuters report on Monday revealed that candidates are engineering their messages to appeal to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other chatbots that more voters now use to answer questions about taxes, housing and public safety.

Documents seen by Reuters show one campaign plan proposing hundreds of AI-friendly policy pages and citations on the websites chatbots most often quote, plus tracking how each chatbot answers political questions and adjusting content until the answers reflect the candidate's platform. The strategy goes well beyond traditional search-engine optimisation, because campaigns now want to become the chatbot's recommendation, not just a top search result.

Consultants say fees can run from a few hundred dollars a month for small monitoring jobs to tens of thousands a month for full campaigns. Experts warn the trend raises difficult questions about fact-checking and misinformation, as voters may not realise how carefully the information feeding their chatbot has been shaped. As AI becomes a daily source of news, the race to influence it is only just beginning.
