US Orders Federal Agencies to Remove China's DeepSeek AI From Their Systems

The United States has ordered all federal civilian agencies to stop buying and remove products built by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from their IT systems, citing national security concerns over the handling of sensitive government data.

The Department of Homeland Security directive goes beyond banning DeepSeek's own products — it also covers third-party products and services built using DeepSeek technology, though agencies can request exceptions. DHS warned that sensitive information from US government users could be accessible to Chinese authorities under Chinese law, and said the models may contain malware or other security vulnerabilities.

The move deepens the US-China technology confrontation. Beijing pushed back on Tuesday, accusing Washington of overstretching the concept of national security and politicizing technology and trade. At least eight governments worldwide have now restricted DeepSeek's products, most citing the same concern: user data stored in China, where the law gives the state broad powers to access it.
