Walmart Lets AI Shopping Agents Buy for You: ChatGPT, Gemini and Muse Can Now Shop

Walmart has opened its doors to AI shopping agents, announcing two new tools that let assistants like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Muse buy products for customers at Walmart and Sam's Club. Walmart President and CEO John Furner unveiled the move on October 21 at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco.

The first tool, "Agent Profiles," launching in November, lets shoppers authorize individual AI agents, set spending limits, require per-transaction approval, track agent purchases separately, and revoke access anytime. The second, the "Walmart Agent Gateway," connects the AI assistants directly to Walmart's systems. Agents are barred from accessing payment card data, Walmart can block rule-breaking agents, and standard return policies still apply. The feature is available to all Walmart account holders with no Walmart+ subscription required — a sharp contrast to Amazon, which is moving to bar outside AI agents from its platform. A Mizuho analyst called the guardrails confidence-building for "experimental" agentic purchases.
