Walmart Lets ChatGPT, Gemini and Muse Shop For You: New AI Agent Gateway Explained

Walmart is opening its checkout to artificial intelligence. The retail giant announced on October 21 new tools that let AI agents shop and complete purchases on customers' behalf — with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Meta's Muse plugged directly into Walmart and Sam's Club systems.
The rollout starts in November with "Agent Profiles": shoppers can authorise individual AI agents, track their purchases separately, set spending limits or require approval for every transaction, and revoke access at any time. A "Walmart Agent Gateway" connects the three big AI assistants so they can search products and finish orders. Walmart says agents are barred from accessing payment-card data and can be blocked for violating company rules — and the feature works for all account holders, with no Walmart+ membership needed. Mizuho analyst David Bellinger said the guardrails build trust in what is still "experimental" agentic buying.
The announcement came from Walmart president and CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco. It draws a clear line against Amazon, which has moved to limit third-party AI shopping agents on its platform — setting up a retail AI arms race just as the holiday shopping season approaches.
