'We Don't Want You': Knicks Fans Taunt LeBron James in His 76ers Debut

LeBron James got a hostile welcome in his first game as a Philadelphia 76er, as New York Knicks fans taunted the 41-year-old with chants of "We don't want you" during Tuesday's season opener at Madison Square Garden.

The moment came in the first quarter, when James stepped to the free-throw line for the first time in a 76ers uniform. The Garden crowd erupted with the chant — a pointed reference to James' admission that he would have joined the Knicks in the 2026 offseason had they not already won the championship. After winning the 2026 NBA title, their first in 53 years, the Knicks reportedly had no interest in signing him.

It was a night of celebration for New York, which raised its championship banner before tip-off. But the spotlight was shared with James, beginning his 24th NBA season with a new team after choosing Philadelphia as his best shot at another ring.

The taunting seemed to work, at least briefly: James missed the second of his two free throws. At halftime, with the Knicks leading 58-54, he had five points, four rebounds and five assists in 16 minutes of action. The Knicks have chased James before — most famously in 2010, when he chose Miami, and in 2018, when he picked the Lakers. This time, the defending champions made it clear they never needed him at all.
