Weekly AI Use Hits 51% as ChatGPT and Gemini Go Mainstream, Survey Finds

More than half of people in six surveyed countries now use generative AI at least once a week, according to a 2026 survey from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism published on Thursday, October 29. Weekly use of standalone AI systems reached 51 per cent across the six countries with historical data, up sharply from 34 per cent in 2025, while daily use climbed from 7 per cent in 2024 to 28 per cent in 2026.

ChatGPT remains the most widely used system, with weekly use rising from 22 per cent to 34 per cent. Google's Gemini grew from 11 per cent to 24 per cent, Microsoft Copilot rose from 6 per cent to 11 per cent, and Claude climbed from 1 per cent to 7 per cent. Using AI to get information jumped from 11 per cent in 2024 to 38 per cent in 2026, though using it for news remained less common, rising from 3 per cent to 9 per cent. Among those who do use AI for news, 49 per cent asked follow-up questions about stories and 46 per cent used it to get the latest news.

Across all nine countries in the survey, 57 per cent encountered AI summaries in search during the previous week. Meanwhile, 14 per cent used an AI agent for a real task, 13 per cent experimented with one, and 67 per cent had not used an agent at all. The numbers suggest AI has moved from novelty to everyday habit for millions — but for most people, the age of handing real tasks to AI agents has not quite arrived yet.
