World Polio Day 2026: Pakistan's Unfinished Fight as 24 Million Children Await November Vaccination Drive

World Polio Day 2026, observed on October 24 under the global theme "Make Polio History", celebrates one of modern medicine's greatest achievements — a disease that once paralysed hundreds of thousands of children every year has been pushed to the brink of eradication. But for Pakistan, the day is also a reminder that the final stretch is not guaranteed: seven cases reported in the country this year show the virus can persist wherever immunity is incomplete.
The next nationwide campaign, scheduled for November 2–8, will aim to protect nearly 24 million children across 97 districts. Its success will depend on reaching every eligible child, supporting frontline workers who go door to door in difficult conditions, and keeping families' trust in the vaccine. Health officials stress that progress built over decades depends on continued vaccination and surveillance — and that no family should face the consequences of a preventable infection because a child missed a dose or a team could not reach their community.
For Pakistan, the task is to make sure a preventable disease no longer threatens another generation. And for the world, eradication will only be complete when wild poliovirus is no longer circulating anywhere on earth.
